Online tutorials now available!

Welcome to the FLA Writing Center!
The FLA Writing Center is available to all students and faculty of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Tutorials are held throughout the term. To book a tutorial, please visit the FLA Writing Center during the following times:
  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:30-15:00
  • Tuesday & Thursday: 9:30-16:30
Tutorials are 50 minutes, one-to-one, or small group sessions, with a trained writing tutor (please note that tutorials during lunch are 45 minutes). Students are advised to prepare for the tutorial by bringing a draft of the assignment they would like to discuss and the assignment task instructions, if available.

Appointments for tutorials should be made well in advance of due dates, thus providing students with ample time to revise their drafts. To make an appointment, please visit the FLA Writing Center (Building 10, Level 4). For more information:
Tel (03) 3238-4083 or Email: wrtng-c@sophia.ac.jp

History
The FLA Writing Center opened in 2004 as one of the "Good Practice" projects established in the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The center was launched by Professor Robert Witmer with funding from the Ministry of Education, awarded in recognition of excellence in undergraduate education. The center is currently under the directorship of Professor Chris Harwood.

Who we are
The FLA Writing Center tutors are current graduate students at Sophia University or Sophia alumni. They are trained in the theory and practice of peer tutoring. Additionally, as students or former students, they have special insights into assignments and professor expectations.

What we do

Tutors will ask questions about your assignment and/or working draft, and will offer advice and answer questions you have about your work. The writing you bring can be at any stage of the writing process and of any length, including just an outline or the writing task instructions.

We also advise students with outlines for oral presentations and speeches, and provide support for writing resumes in English.

Please do not come to the tutorial empty handed. At minimum, you should bring information outlining the writing task and if possible some related notes. To help you prepare for your tutorial, please download, print, and complete the Preparation Form and bring it with you.

Tutors will not edit your paper for grammatical mistakes (they will, however, discuss grammar concerns you may have). Tutors will also not write your papers, nor will they assist you outside tutorial sessions.
A message from the Director of the FLA Writing Center
The study and practice of writing is fundamental to a liberal arts education. Our aim is to help you develop your academic literacy skills and to assist you in becoming more effective and confident writers and communicators in academic contexts. As such, the focus of the center is to develop sustainable writing skills through interactive, collaborative, and individual tutorials and workshops with peer tutors.

Whether you are working on a paper or revising one you have already finished, you can meet with a tutor and receive constructive feedback on your work. Our tutors are trained to assist you in all of the steps of the writing process. We also offer a number of workshops every semester that focus on specific areas of academic writing and communication. We hope that you will continue to use this excellent resource to develop your academic writing needs throughout your time at Sophia University.
